Understanding Military Discharges: What Every Veteran Should Know

A military discharge is the status of a service member when they leave the military. The classification of the discharge determines the veteran’s future and benefits they can access. It is important that both active-duty personnel and veterans understand the different discharge classifications and their implications.
1. Honorable
2. General
3. Other Than Honorable (OTH)
4. Bad Conduct
5. Dishonorable
If you are unfamiliar with what each of these means, this Military.com guide offers a helpful overview. Understanding The Types of Military Discharge
As of June 25, 2024, the VA issued a final rule expanding access to benefits for some former service members. Now, the VA will consider circumstances surrounding a discharge, even if it was previously considered disqualifying.
Important This rule does NOT change your discharge status. It ONLY affects benefits eligibility.
If you are seeking access to benefits, clear your record, or correct your DD-214, you may be eligible for a discharge upgrade or record correction. Each military branch has its own Discharge Review Board (DRB). For more complex cases, you may need to apply through the Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR).
